The Ovington Gospel Oak in winter, Gander Down
The Ovington Gospel Oak is a boundary tree that stands in the middle of a vast wheat field on Gander Down - the boundaries have obviously moved over time. Stories associated with the tree: Puritans worshipped here during times of persecution, St Augustine preached under it. More likely is that a portion of the Gospel was read beneath it during the 'beating the boundary' ceremony (as a less harsh alternative to beating young boys on the boundary). Information from "Hampshire Curiosities" by Jo Draper (The Dovecote Press, 1989). Compare with SU5527 : The Ovington Gospel Oak in summer, Gander Down.
