Looking south up Hilton Road
Hilton Road is one of several closely parallel streets of working-class terraced houses on the steep north slope of Wolborough Hill. Arranged around the summit ridge in SX8670 is a spacious Arcadian suburb of substantial villas among lofty evergreen trees, seen in the distance. At a time when sanitation was imperfect or absent people with the means in the early 19th century built their homes on elevated sites, not just for the view but for fresher air and drainage downhill, thus avoiding the stench and risk to health of middens, polluted watercourses and even people in low-lying areas.
