St James Church Ashmansworth
This is one of those little wonders of the English countryside. Easy to pass by, but most certainly worth the stop.
Built in around the 12th century it is on the site of a roman building. Inside the church I was caught completely by surprise, the church looks its age and the walls show the remains of a number of medieval wall paintings thought to date to the 14th century.
The church is the last resting place of Gerald Finzi the composer (Link
who lived in the adjacent house from 1939 to 1956.
In the entrance porch is an unusual plaque, which commemorates many English composers.
In the churchyard is a large yew tree.
