This is an early foundry and pattern shop from the Union iron works of Thomas and De Winton. There is then a cleared space before coming to the erecting shop and office block (out of view to the right). The works engaged in a wide range of engineering but is well known for its vertical boiler industrial locomotives that were used in local slate quarries.
