Mound of paper crumble off Miller's Lane
Just one of a number of huge piles of paper crumble in this field. Paper crumble is a by-product of paper recycling and consists of small fibres, china clay used to give the glaze to paper and ink residues. The material has a high pH and is used as a liming agent but also as a soil ameliorator and can be beneficially used in land restoration/reclamation work. Probably originating from the SCA mill at Prudhoe, it is likely that it is being stockpiled in this location as ground conditions are far from suitable for spreading operations at present. As the production process is a year-round activity the waste product has to be stored somewhere or disposed of to landfill. (Information supplied by Mac McCarron).
