Until the 1890s when the steam mill was built on the level above it, the upper of the two levels shown in this photo was the main slate reduction area. It was directly linked to the pit by a tunnel. However, as the pit deepend, a new tunnel cut at a lower level became necessary and this led to the formation of rubbish runs below the old reduction area.
