Eggborough Power Station - cooling water make-up pump house
Eggborough Power Station - cooling water make-up pump house
This is at Chapel Haddlesey on the River Aire. The surface condensers of the 4 x 500 MW turbo-alternator sets are cooled by water circulated by large pumps and cooled evaporatively in the eight hyperbolic natural draught cooling towers. The cooling water lost by evaporation is made up with water from the Aire pumped by this substantial complex.

By way of comparison - Rugeley B Power Station with only half the installed capacity (1000 MW) has three make-up water pumps each rated at 7,500 gallons per minute and driven by a 225 horsepower motor. I would expect at least one of the three to be a spare.
