Eggborough Power Station
Eggborough Power Station
A 2000 MW coal burning power station with four turboalternators and eight hyperbolic natural draught cooling towers. A typical height for the chimney would be 650' (a guess). The visible 'smoke' is water vapour as the vast majority of the particulates are precipitated out. The vapour from the towers is also water vapour. Power stations like this were the backbone of electricity generation in the UK from the 1960s onwards until privatisiation and 'dash for gas' saw the rise of the combined cycle plant. The EU's Large Combustion Plant Directive will see off all this generation that hasn't got flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) plant.
