I'm used to seeing these things on high ground, but this one was obviously necessary on the very flat heathland east of the Beaulieu river and the associated Beaulieu Estate. William Cobbett, the nineteenth century critic, was not taken with the place. Is his book of "Rural Rides" he wrote: "Never was a more barren tract of land than these seven or eight miles... a poorer spot than this New Forest there is not in all England; nor I believe, in the whole world."
