NY2113 : Quarry on south side of Black Star

Quarry on south side of Black Star
Quarry on south side of Black Star
Black Star is a minor top of Fleetwith Pike overlooking Honister Pass. The area has been very extensively quarried, a process continuing to the present day. This part of the quarrying operation was probably not being worked when the image was recorded but it appears to have another purpose; the crates seen on the floor of the quarry at its entrance contain finished roofing slates. The slates will surely have been machined from quarried rock in workshops at Honister Pass itself and then transported back up the mountainside to be stored here - but if so, for what purpose? It's possible that there's insufficient secure storage space at the pass and that the finished building material is kept well away from the public road to prevent theft!
