Drax Power Station
Drax Power Station
Photographed from Burn across the WWII airfield.

Drax is Europe's second biggest coal fired power station at 3.96 GW and fires coal, biomass and petcoke (petroleum coke). Three units are being converted to biomass firing. There are 6 x 660 MW steam turbines served by 6 boilers. The main chimney is 850' and there are twelve cooling towers. The shorter chimney serves 6 gas turbines but only three are currently commissioned and see little use.

Drax was built in two phases and this was the view from my maternal grandparents' house. I watched the chimney go up in the 1970s.
