'The harbour' Thirsk
'The harbour' Thirsk
This short stretch of sandstone walling, complete with mooring rings, is all that remains of a failed early 19th century scheme to bring a canal into Thirsk. Plans were made to canalise the Swale and tributaries to allow barges to reach Bedale, Thirsk [via Cod Beck] and Northallerton, but money ran out before the scheme could be completed.
