Sts John Cantius and Nicholas Church
This is the Roman Catholic Church serving the Broxburn area. The original 12th century kirk of St Nicholas was taken over by the Protestants at the Reformation, and until the influx of workers to the shale oil industry there was no formal Roman Catholic presence in the parish. By 1862 there were enough Roman Catholics to support the founding of the Broxburn Mission, so the congregation celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2012. The church was gifted by the Dowager Countess of Buchan, and built to a design by Shiells and Thomson in 1880-1881. It contains some notable items including a 15th century basin from the mediaeval church at Uphall, rescued from a field near Kirkhill, donated by the Earl of Buchan and now in use as the font. The high altar is by Pugin and Pugin.
