East of Philpstoun the north bank of the canal is wooded, but the south bank is open until the canal reaches the shale bing that forms the skyline here
Pardovan and Philpstoun: changing place names :: NT0476
As I began to research some of the images taken around here, I came to realise that there have been quite significant changes in the place names. Comparing the present maps with the Ordnance Survey Six-inch map of 1856, these are the principal changes.

In the 1850s Philpstoun is the name applied to what is now marked as Old Philpstoun in NT0577, and what is now marked as East Philpstoun was not separately named.

The present village of Philpstoun did not exist at all in the 1850s. On that site was the farm of Wester Pardovan. In the 1890s, a few years after the construction of the Philpstoun oil Works on land south-east of Westfield, two streets of miners' cottages, L-shaped in plan, had been built on land just west of Wester Pardovan Farm, and a United Presbyterian church stood by the road west of the new cottages.

Easter Pardovan Farm is now marked as Fairniehill on the maps, but the change of name was not effected until some time in the 1930s or 1940s.

Pardovan House (which, paradoxically, is north-west of Wester Pardovan!) and Philpstoun House, which is north-east of Old Philpstoun, are unchanged.
