Birmingham Children's Hospital
Birmingham Children's Hospital
Seen from the top of Corporation Street. The Victorian red brick and terracotta confection is on the left and the 20th century wards and emergency department are on the right with a bridge link. This was Birmingham's third general hospital and was closed in the early 1990s. It was then disused for a while until the Children's hospital was relocated from its site at Fiveways and renamed the Princess of Wales Hospital.

The General was one of my haunts and I was a senior house officer there in the mid 80s, first for general medicine, venereology and A&E and then for general pathology. I was a senior registrar in cellular pathology when the place was finally closed. Our department's closure was announced with about two weeks' notice and everybody was relocated very promptly.

I apologise for the lousy picture - it was overcast, subzero and late December with little daylight at best.
