Hedge to the east of Vinnels Lane
Hedge to the east of Vinnels Lane
This is not a remarkable hedge but it is typical of many which border sunken lanes in Southern England. At this time of year the evergeen ivy is conspicuous. It is bound to flourish in the crepuscular gloom cast by the dominant broadleaved plants. However it is they which are the indicators of the age of the lane. In 1974 Dr. Max Hooper published a formula in his book 'Hedges' . It states that the age of the hedge is equal to the number of woody species, counted in a thirty yard distance, multiplied by 110 years. Here hazel, elder and field maple are readily identifiable.
