Philpstoun Bing
Philpstoun Bing
This is a totally man-made landscape. It is the waste produced by the shale oil industry, specifically by the Philpstoun oil works in this case. The oil works started production in 1883, closed in 1931 and were dismantled in 1935. Shale bings always have that characteristic red colour, but I was surprised to see how large some of the solid lumps of waste are. The tracks among the colonising birches, and the distant sound of engines, suggest that the bing is used by off-road motorcyclists.
