NS3979 : Former Alexandria Parish Church
taken 11 years ago, near to Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland
By December 2022, the building had been demolished after having been severely damaged by fire earlier in the year, as is related in more detail below. It had long been out of ecclesiastical use.
The building dated from 1840. See Link (at the Vale of Leven website) for more on the history of this church in relation to others in the area.
The building was first damaged by fire on the evening of 17th of April (Easter Sunday) 2022. Despite the unfavourable timing (a Sunday evening during a prominent holiday), fire services dealt admirably with the situation before much damage was done. However, on the following Saturday evening, the building was the scene of a much worse conflagration.
By way of context, it is worth adding that there was little rainfall in the weeks leading up to these events, and that many grass fires had been maliciously started on nearby moorland.
According to news reports, there had been, before the fires, plans to bring the derelict building back into use, although not as a church. This would have proved expensive; see, e.g., Link at (STV News).
