Retort House, Gas Street
Retort House, Gas Street
A grade II* listed building dating from 1822 and one of the last remaining buildings of one Birmingham's first gas works. This was where the retorts were for the heating of coal anaerobically to produce town gas. The works closed in 1850 and this building was 'rediscovered' in 1992. It has been restored and is lying empty awaiting an appropriate use.

The nearer tall building and chimney are an 1857 brassworks. The actual retort house is the lower distant section with two arch headed windows. it is L-shaped with a unique fireproof roof construction. The site also includes a later retort house extension and a covered coal store building. This is a very important building from the early days of the gas industry.

The retort house was refurbished in 19998-9 by Crosby Homes for non-residential use but lay empty for some time thereafter. At the same time the adjoining site of the gas holders was redeveloped for exclusive housing. In 2014 it was purchased by the Church of England as a second place of worship in the parish of St Luke. It is now the main venue for a 'resourcing church' in partnership with Holy Trinity Brompton and the Birmingham Diocese. The target audience is students and young adults. I must thank fellow Geograph member Chris hodrien for supplying the additional information in this paragraph.
