TQ3697 : Brimsdown Power Station 1975 Again, I'm sure we have knowledgeable browsers who will put me straight. I believe this is the Brimsdown power station that was the only known British example of the Loeffler boiler system. This was a system that enjoyed a brief vogue in the 1930s, mainly in Europe. It was a system that used forced circulation of superheated steam that was sparged into an unfired drum to raise more steam. The tubes around the furnace were actually full of steam. This overcame metallurgical and feedwater quality problems but rapid advances rendered it unecessary quite quickly. One problem with this was that to start it you needed to fill the system with steam in order to make steam. Chicken and egg or what? There was an adjoining conventional power station that could do the honours.
