Opened in 1875 by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway on its line from Manchester Victoria to Rochdale. View south towards Manchester. This is also the junction for Liverpool - L&YR trains could turn right and travel via Bury, Bolton and Wigan without going via Manchester. Part of this line is now the heritage East Lancashire Railway.
