The M50 approaching junction 1
Junction 1 is about one mile to the west of the M50's junction with the M5. Until 1970 when the M5 was extended further south from junction 8 all southbound traffic on the M5 had to follow the M50 to junction 1 and then the A38 to Tewkesbury, Gloucester and beyond. In those days Tewkesbury was a bottle-neck causing holiday traffic to queue back to the M50 every summer Saturday. On the horizon in line with the motorway is May Hill and on the right the southern end of the Malvern Hills.
