NG7143 : Straw Chamber, Uamh nam Breagaire
near to Applecross, Highland, Great Britain

Straw Chamber, Uamh nam Breagaire
Although the Applecross peninsula is composed mainly of Torridonian Sandstone, a small bed of Jurassic Limestone outcrops near the coast. This has eroded to form caves, generally of small dimensions, although this final chamber of Uamh nam Breagaire has more generous proportions.
The straw stalactites are actually very delicate tubes of calcite formed from drops of water flowing down the inside of them, over a period of several millennia.
