Edge of Holmsley Ridge gravel pit, New Forest
Edge of Holmsley Ridge gravel pit, New Forest
This close-up of the edge of the disused gravel pit shows just how poor the soil in this area of heathland is. This is main reason why the forest was never developed for agricultural use. The gravel extracted from this pit was used on the surface of the tracks that run through this part of the forest.
