Oaks within Castle Piece, Roe Inclosure, New Forest
Castle Piece is an iron-age fort on a gentle slope above Linford Brook, although it is unlikely that it was a defensive structure. Its single earthen bank (seen in the background, covered with bracken) encloses an area of around 4.5 acres, with an in-turned entrance on the southeastern side. It was planted with oak in 1811 when Roe Inclosure was first enclosed and the trees are reaching maturity. Some, like the one on the left here, are smothered with ivy.
