The lower pit of the Upper Glynrhonwy Quarry
The lower pit of the Upper Glynrhonwy Quarry
This view is taken from the causeway between the upper and lower pits of Upper Glynrhonwy. Beyond the road causeway (the barriered white strip centre)is the upper pit of Lower Glynrhonwy Quarry. All three pits, plus another two nearer to Llyn Padarn, were linked by drainage and transportation tunnels. It was once possible to walk (or ride)from the top of Upper Glynrhonwy to the lake shore along the floors of pits and through underground tunnels. Most of these tunnels have now collapsed.
