Temperature inversion, Cheshire Plain
A huge temperature inversion (fellow walkers reported the temperature rose from 0 degrees C to 9 degrees while driving from Sheffield up the Woodhead Pass) left a blanket of smoggy haze hiding the Cheshire Plain, seen here from near the Wain Stones on Bleaklow. Incredibly, above and beyond the haze, the mountains of Snowdonia were clearly visible, over 90 miles distant. See SH6054 : Snowdon from Bleaklow! for a magnified extract from this photo. The plume of steam or smoke to the right of the picture is thought to be from the Fiddler's Ferry Power Station between Warrington and Widnes (SJ5586).
