Wylam Waggonway at Cathouse Plantation
Wylam Waggonway at Cathouse Plantation
A branch from the former Scotswood to North Wylam Railway (now the Wylam Waggonway footpath and cycle route) can be seen on the left. It leaves the former railway on a gradual curve just east of its triangular junction with the lines to and from Heddon Margaret Colliery and runs for a short distance south through the narrow forest plantation where it appears to have terminated on the north bank of the River Tyne, close to The Tide Stone NZ1465 : River Tyne Tide Stone. There is another photo here NZ1465 : Disused railway line, Cathouse Plantation.

It formed a temporary railway line which was run along and actually across the bed of the river by the Tyne Improvement Commission between 1898 and 1912. It was used to transport iron slag from Spencers Iron Works in Newburn from the north bank to the south. The slag was used to reinforce the river banks.
