Sand and gravel extraction site, near Badminston Farm
The sand and gravel extraction site started off on the north side of the B3053 road, adjacent to the Fawley power station (seen in the distance). After a planning battle the extraction company has been permitted to extend the extraction works to the two fields bordered by Badminston Lane, the B3053, Badminston Drove and Badminston Common. This view is from the footpath that passes through the middle of the site, from Badminston garage to the dog-leg in Badminston Drove. The planning report for the extension read "The proposal is to extract approximately two million tonnes of sand and gravel over a period of 15 years at a rate of about 150,000 tonnes a year. The working would be in 13 phases with progressive restoration. A new processing plant, including a concrete batching plant, would be installed on land adjacent to the power station. Mineral extraction would commence south of the B3053, with a conveyor taking sand and gravel to the processing plant, which would go under the road through a tunnel." The site is to be restored to a "mosaic of herb rich pasture with a pattern of hedgerows similar to those shown on early (circa 1860) maps of the Manor of Cadland Estate."
