Brixton was opened as Brixton and South Stockwell in 1862 by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway to serve the affluent Victorian suburbs of South London.
Three bronze sculptures stand on the platforms. Known as ‘Platforms Piece’ by Kevin Atherton, they were installed in 1986 and the statues are life casts of three people who regularly travelled from Brixton. In 2016 they were listed at Grade II by English Heritage as they were thought to be the first work of public sculpture depicting black British people. See Link for a full account.
In the distance is Bon Marche on Brixton Road. This was once a John Lewis store.
There is a site called Urban75.org that has a very large collection of photos and panoramas of Brixton. http://www.urban75.org/brixton/photos/index.html It's well worth following the link and having an explore if you want to see more of Brixton than the Geograph photos show. Some would qualify as Geographs in themselves, and some would be good Supplementals. I've already linked to this site from this picture TQ3175 : Southwyck House, Brixton
