Clipstone Colliery
Clipstone Colliery
This iconic former colliery is about to be demolished. It was found surrounded by Heras fencing with demolition contractors setting up shop out of field to the left. The two headgears are claimed to be the tallest in Europe and between is the winding engine house with two ground mounted Koepe winders with DC motors on the Ward Leonard/Ilgner control system. The pit closed in 2003 and this complex is listed but still to be demolished. Although a steam winder enthusiast I am pleased to have seen this more modern example just in time.
