Village Lockup in Shrewton
Village Lockup in Shrewton
The mid 18th century domed blind house or lock up. Besides being an immediate prison for the village wrongdoers, it is believed to have offered secure accommodation for prisoners being escorted between Devizes and Salisbury. Unfortunately in the 20th century its position on the edge of the road caused it to be the unwilling participant in many accidents involving lorries and tanks. A few years ago it was moved back a few yards from the roadside.
