NT4658 : Soutra

taken 11 years ago, 3 km from Blegbie, East Lothian, Great Britain

Roads have always crossed the Southern Uplands at their narrowest, up on Soutra Hill between the Lammermuir and Moorfoot Hills. The Romans came this way, and today it is an important road pass travelling towards England from Edinburgh. However Soutra is feared for snow, and it is fitting that at least one Soutra picture is of unremitting bleakness. Taken in a snowstorm whilst leaving Lauderdale late one afternoon.

The chestnut paling fence is a snow fence, the idea being that snow is deposited by the fence, not on the road.
