Lord Cardigan's legacy
Lord Cardigan's legacy
Not literally, but this Imperial Russian bronze field gun, dated 1823, is a reminder of the ill-judged charge of James Brudenall the 7th Earl's cavalry regiment, the Light Brigade, into "the valley of death" at Balaclava on October 25th 1884. His commander, Lord Raglan, gave the order - mistakenly as it turned out - and Lord Cardigan's men attacked the main Russian positions entirely without support, losing a third of their number in the process. The cannon was placed here on the 150th anniversary of the tragedy (which was a success in military terms.)
