Gentleman's Row, Enfield: view south
There is no uniformity about this stretch of Gentleman's Row. Properties vary greatly in scale and style: the largest are Victorian, while the smallest may well date from before 1700. The Row is built-up on its east side only, properties being separated from their biggish front-gardens by the public footway - an unusual arrangement that makes for a very attractive townscape, and one that puts 21st century gated developments to shame (or so it seems to me).
Right at the doorstep of the nearest property is a black-painted coal-hole cover - giving access to a coal cellar, but rather awkwardly placed. Doorstep and front door must have ended up very grimy after a delivery of coal. Compare:
