Mausoleum at Manston House
Mausoleum at Manston House
This domed mausoleum holds a curious slot in history. It is the place where the modern practice of cremating the dead was pioneered.
Cremation was practised by many civilisations, including the Romans and Saxons, but after that it died out in Britain. The interest was revived in Victorian times and it was at Manston House that the first cremation took place in the early 1880s.
