An extremely handsome duck despite its monochromatic plumage. Known as a'sawbill' because of the serrated edges of its bill that enable it to grip the fish that are a staple of its diet. It breeds in the far north in the vicinity of shallow lakes and slow moving rivers where there is the necessary amount of tree cover to provide suitable nest holes. Rare in British waters with less than 200 winter visitors reported annually, it is a privilege to see one at close quarters though the uneasy feeling that it is a captive bird is somewhat ameliorated by it being in a collection dedicated to the preservation of our natural wealth through the medium of education and captive breeding programmes. Females are also known as redheads as they have a red-brown head in common with other 'sawbills'.
