Ulva: the church
Ulva: the church
Ulva's church is typical of many in the Highlands and Islands because it was one of many built from 1823 thanks to a £50,000 parliamentary grant to help increase the number of churches in the remoter parts of Scotland. It was built in 1828 to a standard design by Thomas Telford. The total bill for the building, including the manse, was a little under £1,500.

The resident population of the island was 570 at that time, although this plummeted to around 150 by 1851 after a new landowner had cleared much of the island for grazing. Today, the population of Ulva and Gometra combined totals 21 and the church doubles up as a community hall.
