Birmingham New Street railway station, 2011
Opened in 1854, this was a joint station for the London & North Western Railway and the Midland Railway, whose south-east to north west and south-west to north-east lines crossed here. The Midland used the more southerly side of the station, platforms visible on the left here.
View west. As built, the 1854 station had a large single-span arched roof. Sadly this was demolished in 1964 and the station was rebuilt under a dark concrete deck, opening in 1967. The station building was again partially rebuilt a couple of years after this image was taken.
