Barns and road, Wingland Marsh
Barns and road, Wingland Marsh
Wingland Marsh was created by diverting the erratic course of the River Nene down a deep man-made drainage channel. It was dug in the mid 19th century by a largely Irish labour force, who lived in squalid cholera-ridden camps nearby. There is a tale of a mass grave of hundreds of navvies who died in a flash epidemic.
