SO7336 : Eastnor Castle, Eastnor

taken 22 years ago, near to Eastnor, County of Herefordshire, England

Eastnor Castle, Eastnor
Robert Smirke's Norman Revival "castle" must have enabled its owner, John Somers Cocks, Baron Somers, to indulge his fantasies of being a medieval overlord. It is, however, generally reckoned to be fairly authentic, especially for its date, 1811-24, as Smirke was a serious architect. That said, the ground-floor windows seen here bear the Gothic hallmark of pointed arches! Pevsner gives a very precise cost of £85,923. Grade I listed.
The house is seen more dramatically from afar, e.g.: SO7336 : Eastnor Castle and SO7336 : Eastnor Castle,
