Planned in 1939, the airfield didnít open until 1943. It was used in October that year as a USAAF training base. Later the RCAF operated Beaufighter and Mosquito squadrons at Winkleigh to intercept night-time Luftwaffe raids on west country cities. Flying ceased in 1945 and the station was sold out of service in 1958
