Ackworth Cricket Club
Geoff Boycott, former England Test Match Cricketer, who captained England for two tests on the tour of New Zealand in 1978 when the captain, Mike Brearley was injured, played his early cricket for Ackworth Cricket Club on this ground before graduating to Yorkshire League cricket and then to the Yorkshire County and England teams. The photographer remembers, when scoring in a local league match for another team in the 1960s, looking through the Ackworth scorer's book at the tea interval and seeing an entry in a charity match scorecared, when Ackworth played a "Geoff Boycott XI" - "Boycott, G. lbw 0". Who was the umpire who dared to give out the great man lbw, for a duck, in a charity match?!
