NO5793 : Stile over deer fence
near to Ballogie, Aberdeenshire, Great Britain

Stile over deer fence
This stile gives access through a locked gate into the fenced enclosure that is Glenferrick Native Pinewood. The fence, originally erected to exclude deer, has been twice modified to make it more visible to woodland grouse such as the Capercaillie. Firstly orange barrier netting was attached to the fence, but the instability of the plastic to ultra violet radiation caused the netting to become very brittle and break off. The second modification was the appending of the vertical wooden slats to the fence. This gave additional weight to the fence and created a greater surface area making it problematic in heavy driving snow. The fence was further strengthened to guard against total collapse under heavy snow.
