Boundary Stones, nr Hob Cross
Boundary Stones, nr Hob Cross
Two boundary stones reside close to Hob Cross. The smaller one is written: RC 1798, the larger: SK AW.D 1814 TC 1856. 'RC' was Robert Chaloner, Lord of Guisborough Manor. 'TC' was his brother Thomas who succeeded him!
Hob Cross which is now merely a shaft with the inscription RC 1798, was originally a monastic cross to help pilgrims on their passage across the Moors, from Guisborough Priory to Whitby Abbey.
