The Gatehouse of St. Osyth Priory
The Gatehouse of St. Osyth Priory
Around 1127, a priory was established here for Augustinian canons by Richard de Belmeis. This fine late 15th century Gatehouse is the only complete surviving building left from the priory. The monastic church was completely destroyed during the dissolution in 1539 and the rest of the monastic buildings were later converted into a mansion by Lord Darcy.
