Ruins of Faslane Chapel
See
NS2489 : Ruins of Faslane Chapel for the main description of the ruin. The present photograph shows the eastern end wall with its two lancet windows. The ruin now looks much the same as it did in the nineteenth century, except that the largely disappeared southern wall has been rebuilt, and the upper part of the eastern gable (shown here) has gone. See the listing text (link in the second end-note) for further details.
Of the two memorials that can be seen in the foreground, the taller one was erected (1897) by Helen Thom (d.1911) to commemorate her husband Malcolm McIntyre. The smaller one on the right has an inscription: "in loving memory of my dear husband John Taylor"; there does not appear to be any indication of the date.
Faslane Chapel Also known as St Michael's Chapel, the ruin (c. 13th century) is located within Faslane Cemetery – Link – and it is depicted on the first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1860) as being surrounded by a smaller burial ground; at present, a few 19th-century memorials are located there. See Link (at Canmore) for further details.
Faslane Cemetery The cemetery dates from the first decade of the twentieth century. The ruined Faslane Chapel (possibly thirteenth-century) – Link – and its former burial ground are located in the cemetery's south-western corner. For further information, see the cemetery's listing text: Link (at Historic Environment Scotland).
