Lassodie :: NT1192

Lassodie was a mining village north of Dunfermline. It once had a population of 1400 serving several coal mines. The deep mines closed in the 1920s and the village largely abandoned.

More recently (1990s) the area became a huge open cast site which extended as far as Kelty (St Ninians open cast). In April 2013 the closure of the open cast site was announced. Some of the site in the east is being landscaped as a sculpture park with big earthwork sculptures.

There was also an estate here centred on Lassoddie House, again destroyed.

There are now plans to extend mining to Loch Fitty which will be drained and later reinstated.
