Back to front
The founder of Moira, an Irishman from Moira in Northern Ireland, built workers cottages for the staff at his pits. Built back to front so that the front door opened out on to the garden, these cottages make up Poplar Road, off Donisthorpe Lane. Far from having a relaxing outlook though, the gardens of these cottages actually faced Donisthorpe Colliery so the poor hard working pit man even had to look at his place of work whilst in his garden.
