This is the old village of Babbacombe its most infamous resident was John Lee who was convicted of murder in 1884 and became known as "The man they could not hang" see Link
John ,who was 20 years old at the time, was sentenced to death at Exeter prison on 23rd February 1885 but the trap door on the gallows failed to open after three attempts.
His sentence was then commuted to life in prison ,of which he served 22 years, and after being released he lived till he was 69.
